When bad things happen on a good day

Before all the wedding weekend festivities began, we woke up last Friday morning to our Barfing Cat Alarm Clock, also known as Wiggs. This is the type of alarm clock that makes you scramble for the paper towels and carpet cleaner with your eyes half open, while wrangling the cat into the bathroom. Not fun, but it got us out of bed and we were anxious to start our weekend as our good friends were getting married. Then I discovered that Wiggs had peed on my favorite summer sweater, which was on top of the dining room chair. If you are at all familiar with cat pee, you know the chair was ruined. No amount of cleaning will get that smell out. Usually this would have spurred a lot of conversation about whether to throw the cat to the coyotes, but we just took it in stride. The chairs needed to be reupholstered as they are about 40-50 years old with the original cushions and were looking very worn. We looked up a place on the internet, loaded the four chairs in the car and off we went. There was no way the cat was going to spoil our weekend. We were in such good spirits that cat pee ruined furniture couldn't get us down. Now that's a good mood!

Picked up the chairs today

They look fantastic and feel even better. The old ratty cushions had no cush left in them. Now I am sitting two inches higher at the table and my bum is sitting comfortably in style.

Great work and service, but the choice of fabrics was limited and fairly conservative. I would definitely use Danny again but I would buy my own fabric if I wanted something jazzier.

Who needs another toaster?

For the wedding, a group of friends decided to pool our resources and get a Photo Booth as a gift for the Bride & Groom. It was a hit with the kids at the wedding as well as the adults. Boy... was it a hit.

Before the Guests arrived...

Later that night...

And after a few Whiskey Sours...obviously.

The Photo Booth was from Red Cheese. They provided a person to man the photo booth, a scrapbook, scissors, markers, glue sticks, and double prints (one for the book and one to keep). Plus the Bride & Groom will get a CD of all the photos. This is a great edition to any party because when you shut the curtain to the booth it gets Craaaaazy. As you can see.

Best Wedding Ever

What a wedding. It was perfect all the way around. The ceremony involved a fake priest, a visit from the Pope, and wonderful words of love in front of family and friends.

And a BIG ole kiss to seal the deal.

Dinner was fantastic. The band played great music. We danced. We drank. Everyone was feeling the love in the room.

The big surprise of the night was the wedding cake, which the Groom had no idea about. hehehe.

The cake was Lambeau Field, Home of the Green Bay Packers and the Groom's Home Team being from Wisconsin and all. When the cake was wheeled out he was absolutely speechless. Not only that, when you looked around the room, every man was standing to behold the sacred stadium that was now taking center stage on the dance floor. Everything in the universe came to a halt. They could not cut the cake for a half and hour as people thronged to take pictures of it. In fact, at the end, they had to wheel the cake out of the room to slice it otherwise there would probably have been tears in quite a few men's eyes as Lambeau Field was deconstructed to plain old cake on a plate. It would remain whole in everyone's memory. The Bride became the coolest person in the room at that point as voted by all the men in the room, band included.

It really and truly was a joyous occasion. I can honestly say it was one of the best weddings I have ever attended. The Bride and I have been friends for 26 years and she has truly found the perfect match for her. It was an honor to share & celebrate their union. Wow....what a night.

Drum Roll Please....

Here's a note from my Mom.

Thank you all for your suggestions: I liked Tappington and Santino the best. Frankie was my nickname when I was in Jr. High. Tapo was fine with my hubs and I - BUT not so with my daughter. The hubs started calling him Tapolito which I didn't like. You know how it is with nicknames. This kitten has four dark gray paws, extra big on the front - quite cute. My hubs did not want a sissy name and wanted something different, he is a retired Marine and wants our kitten to grow up to be one tough cat. This kitten follows my hubs all over the place and likes to sleep under his chin. It's amazing to see him so tender and loving to an animal. Well - we have decided on a new name. It is "Boondockers". We are calling him Boon for short but "What's up Doc" - rolls out easy. I looked up Boon in the dictionary and the definition is: Answer to a prayer. Doc works too, in honor of my stubborn daughter who wouldn't give up on getting her PhD. So, thank you one and all - Hope you all like his new name too.

There it is...Boondocker.

Much better.
Thank you everyone for your good names and help.

Help Name my Mom's Kitten

Meet my Mom's new baby. She rescued him this weekend as this little guy is the offspring of a barn cat. There are lots of dangers lurking about for a kitten on the fringe of the city. There are coyotes, owls, and hawks skulking about a barnyard. My Mom has been wanting a cat for a while and this cutie resembles a cat we had named Bartholomew. He's a polydactyl, which means he has six toes. He also has blue eyes.

The Naming Of Cats by T. S. Eliot
The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

Now when this handsome little fella came home this weekend she first called him E.T. (Extra Toes). I told her I didn't really like that name. She said she liked Sammy. I liked Sammy and thought she could call him Sammy Six Toes or Sammy Sixty Six. Every good mobster kitty needs a solid nickname. Well today she told me his name is Tapo. That would be TAP (like the faucet) OH. What? Huh?! Does that mean something in some language? Nope, it's the name of the Canyon the barn is located in. My problem is that Tapo is neither pretty, nor dignified, nor special, or even cute. (On a side note: It's the animal hating husband that insists on giving this cute kitty the ugliest name he can think of. Animal haters shouldn't be allowed to have a say in the name, don't you think? They really don't have the talent for it. Okay...he's not exactly an animal hater but he is definitely not an animal lover. On the animal lover scale...10 being you LOVE animals...he's a two) The situation is very complicated as you can see. As Mr. Eliot expressed in his poem, the naming of cats is a difficult matter and so I turn to you.

I ask you to take a good look at this magnificent creature and please leave a suggestion or two of name worthy of this feline. Please no entries that rhyme with taco.

For an added incentive, if your name prevails to persuade and encourage my Mother's to change the name to yours I will personally send you a token of great appreciation.

Now give it your best shot as my Mom can be slightly willful, but I believe deep down she would like a better name too. No creature should be stuck with the name Tap-o, or Tappy, or T.P. for the rest of it's life. What? You know, you've got to give it a nickname. It just happens.

Craft Hope

Friday I was bopping around the internets and stopped by My Own Crafty Wonderland and read about Craft Hope.

Craft Hope is doing good deeds through crafty making and giving. The first three projects have been pillowcase dresses & shorts that went to children in Brazil & Mexico, Dollies for children in Nicaragua, and Blankets, booties, and beanies for Babies in India. You have to check out the pictures of the kids with the dollies. Precious and heart opening. Project four is just underway and when I read the project I knew I was going to contribute. Project Four is making Sock Monkeys for The Little Heroes Preschool Burn Camp in Northern California. Sock Monkeys! I love Sock Monkeys. I have made a couple before here & here.

To learn how to make a sock monkey check out the tutorials here and here.
To buy old timey sock monkey making socks go to Fox River Mills.

Maybe you will be moved to make a sock monkey. They are so much fun and easy peasy to make. A word of caution, sock monkeys are very mischievous and curious creatures.

For example, here's a Sock Monkey that I made for my friend Joe. His name is Dougall Chang and is a lab monkey at a secret facility in the heart of Texas. He had some adaptability issues at first but I have been informed that Dougall is learning to work and play well in the lab.

He has made some friends.

He assists in quality assurance protocols.

Oops...caught sleeping on the job.

Never forgets to wear protective garb.

Sometimes he needs a timeout.

It's a learning process.
Don't say I didn't warn you when the sock monkeys take over the house.

Also don't forget to check out Craft Hope.

Vintage Photo Friday

I just love everything about this photo, especially the grand cat on table. Look at that fella. He's practically a lion.

This one reminds me of The Secret Garden.

This morning I was tending my front garden that has been seriously neglected this past spring. Everything was overgrown, bloomed out, and weedy. I cut back the Jerusalem Sage, that bloomed prolifically this year. The Kangaroo Paws had to be cut back. The Euphorbia had to be pulled out completely because I found what looked to be garden barnacles on it. Seriously, some kind of barnacle was sucking the life out of the plant. Does anyone know what the really name of the garden barnacle? It kind of freaked me out so I uprooted the entire plant and threw it out. The Palo Verde tree and the Protea were trimmed up because they were overtaking the front steps and tickling everyone who passed by. This was the first year out of three that my Protea bloomed and I was very happy every time I passed by the blooms. The garden is definitely looking better all trimmed up and without weeds.

How does your garden grow?

Goods Eats & Art

There has been lots of birthday celebrating around these parts. On Monday night we had birthday dinner at Mozza Osteria. They have a great deal for dinner at the bar. Every Monday through Wednesday Osteria Mozza is offering a special three-course menu exclusively at the "Amaro Bar." Choose one item from Nancy's Mozzarella Bar (or share the Mozzarella Tasting for two), one Pasta, a Dessert and a glass of either Bastianich Friulano or La Mozza Morellino di Scansano for $35 (plus tax and service). No reservations are necessary; the seats at the bar are available on a first come first served basis so walk on in!

It's really a great way to go because you can wait up to four weeks to get a reservation. The hubby has the red wine (Sansano) and I had the white (Bastianich). from the Mozzarella Bar we had the Smoked Mozzarella with prosciutto & the Burrata with grilled asparagus, brown butter, guanciale & Sicilian almonds. The entrees were Maltagliati with wild boar ragu' & Ricotta Gnudi with wild spinach. For dessert, Torta della Nonna with honeycomb & pine nuts & Cannoli filled with coffee, caramel, and choclate chip gelato. Everything was very delicious. We did order a little more wine because we were celebrating. My favorites of the evening were the Burrata, the Gnudi, and the Torta della Nonna.

After dinner the hubby took me to the Apple store and bought me an iphone!

Here's my first picture from the phone. He's the best for buying me a present for his birthday! It was a really fun night.

On Tuesday we went to LACMA to see Pompeii and the Roman Villa, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We even did the audio tour. The hubby hadn't seen the Broad Contemporary yet so we walked through there too. Your Bright Future: 12 Contemporary Artists from Korea had some really interesting pieces in it. I loved Needle Woman and one of the installations invites you to sit down and knit. Love that! We didn't stay and knit because we were hungry.

On the way out we did check out the interesting & colorful installation of plastic wares.

It really beckons you to be a kid again and run through the hanging garlands of plastica ala 99cent Store.

So we did.

It was a great day at the museum.

But let's talk about my latest obsession. My iphone! I love it. I get reception at my house in the canyon, which I never did before. It takes pretty decent pictures. Anyone got any recommendations for apps? It's a whole new world and I am having fun exploring it. It is almost as much fun as running through bright colored plastic colanders, cups, and pails on a string.

Go to the Cirque

Forget about that Canadian Cirque that has taken over Las Vegas and get out and support LA's own Cirque...Cirque Berzerk!

My hairstylist (whom I had not seen in over 6 months. Yikes! I had to wash the gray right outta of my hair) told me about it. The way he described it was if Tim Burton decided to make his own Circus, it would look something like Cirque Berzerk. He said it was incredible and he was right.

The hubby's birthday is Monday so a date night was in order. The hubby would never in a million years guess where we were going. No clue. He had no clue. hehe.

On a parcel of land right behind Chinatown on N. Spring Stree is Los Angeles State Park. Who knew right? I certainly did not. but as you drive up a BIG TOP dominates the barren urban landscape. You can take a picnic. No alcohol allowed, but not to worry there is a bar...and you can bring your drinks into the tent when the performance starts...double fisted if you so desire. Because a twisted and demented circus demands the same from you.

The show is phenomenal and that's all I am going to say.

That, and you really should go ASAP.
Because the Cirque Berzerk only runs until August 9th!
That's next weekend, folks.
Yeah...when did we get into August?

So grab your favorite friend/s, buy tickets, maybe bust out your corset or fascinator and get yourself to Cirque Berzerk. You will be so glad you did. It's a sick little treasure on the outskirts of Chinatown. It smacks of 30's carnival yet urban madness.

You can party afterwards back at the bar and listen to Vaud and the Villains well into the LA night.

It's a guaranteed night to remember. Go. GO and get your tickets!!!

Vintage Photo Friday: Postcards

Remember the days of sending postcards?

I miss those days of picking out postcards and scrawling a few lines in a cafe. Then getting foreign stamps and sending them home. On my first visit to Italy, I was twenty and spoke only a few choice (read curse) words aside from please and thank you. I returned to the US after six weeks and nobody had received my postcards. They showed up after a couple more weeks. Apparently I did not send them air mail and they came on a slow boat. It just really added to the adventure. Now we just zip into a stuffy internet cafe, send emails and post on our blogs. Oh technology we love you and your instantness but oh how we miss getting postcards in the mail that take weeks to arrive.

All these postcards came from Nevada Tumbleweed's Vintage Las Vegas postcard collection.

Since you asked...

Thank you everybody for all your kind comments. Wow. I am still marveling that it is finished.

This past weekend was spent in serious decompression. Strange dreams stalked me in my sleep. The first night I was dreaming about the final formatting and what data needed to be included then I woke up and realized there was nothing left to do. It was done. The second night I had a dream that I was late turning in a paper for English class that was worth 25% of my final grade. But when I got to class I realized that I didn't have the book. In fact, I didn't know what the book looked like. In my confusion I realized that I never went to class all semester. I hadn't turned anything in. I was going to fail English class and graduation was 3 days away. You know I woke up in a sweat with that one. So strange how the body and the mind are still in fight mode after these long months.

Some of you asked about the topic of my dissertation.

My research destination...

Las Vegas

I got a job...

in a casino

And became a...

Cocktail Server

My ethnography focused on...

Women's work.

With an emphasis on...

Body and Body Image

And how it is...

Objectified

And...

Commodified on the job

The internalization of the male gaze combined with the objectification and commodification...

Often leads to aesthetic surgery, which is a strategy used by the cocktail servers to conform to beauty ideals and create longevity for themselves in an industry that values youth and beauty.

That's it in a pictorial nutshell, which is so much more interesting than my abstract.

Thank you all again for your warm words. They really made me smile at a time when I should have been excited but found myself just completely exhausted, dumbfounded and slightly befuddled.

From the bottom of my heart....a BIG kiss! MWAH!

DONE!!!

It's official.

The dissertation has been signed, sealed, and accepted.

Things have been pretty sparse around this blog the last few months due to putting my head down and finishing my dissertation. It wasn't even possible to blog about the situation because I didn't want to jinx myself. All my energy had to be focused on the task at hand and I am happy to say it is finally done.

I am a doctor...in the Ph.D. sense.

It is still sinking in.

Can't quite wrap my mind around it yet,

SUMMERTIME

in the Sea & Sun
(These people look like they are having fun.)

Don't forget to wear sunscreen.
(What a cutie.)

Now this poor lady looks parched sitting at the seaside. Maybe she forgot her Nivea.

I think she needs a drink. STAT!

What's your favorite summertime drink?

Here's my drink recipe for the Santino Sling:

Rum
Pineapple Juice
Reed's Extra Spicy Ginger Ale
Lime

Take a collins glass (that's a tall glass). Fill with ice. Pour in 1 oz. rum (use what you have on hand. I prefer light to dark). Pour in pineapple juice to 2/3 height of glass. Top off with ginger ale. Give a squeeze of lime juice and then lime into glass. Add straw and give a stir. Sit down and sip.

Now if you want to get all fancy you could definitely bust out the pineapple chunk, lime squeeze, and maraschino cherry. Oh and the umbrella too. But I prefer to just get to sipping.

Why is it called the Santino Sling? This drink was concocted while watching the finale for Project Runway Season Two where Santino Rice was a finalist.

Natalie & Julia

Don't worry I will not be attempting to move through Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child in 365 days. Although I did pick up both volumes at an estate sale last year and Volume Two was a first edition. Score! I love Julia Child and this is the summer to celebrate her.

My friend Darcy invited me to be in a book club and the first book is Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously by Julie Powell. You might be familiar with Julie's story of blogging her way through Julia Child's recipes and heard of a little movie by the same title starring Meryl Streep coming out August 7. Being a fan of Meryl Streep I was looking forward to the movie and the invitation to the book club is just perfect timing.

I was already in the vortex of Julia Child by watching The French Chef from Netflix.

These episodes are classic and a far cry from the slick productions you see on the Food Network. It is 100% Julia at her best, slicing potatoes and making them three kinds of ways from Sunday. Since I am in the immersion cycle of all things Julia I picked up My Life in France by Julia Child too.

Bon appétit!

Weekend Fun

Learning to Bhangra by incurable_hippie

This past Saturday was one of the best in a long time. In the morning I got some work done, so in the afternoon I headed over to Swerve Studio (on 3rd @ Sweetzer) for a Bollywood Bhangra Beats class. Ellen read about it a few weeks ago and she thought it sounded like something I would do. She was so right. It was loads of fun dancing bhangra. Since I was all warmed up I decided to stay and take the yoga class right afterwards. It was also a great class. After a few weeks of being chained to my desk, it felt exhilerating to move and dance and stretch and sweat and do something totally new.

After class I went home and took a quick shower. Then the hubby and I went to see The Hangover. Hilarious. As someone who had her bachelorette party in Sin City, the movie is not far off. I would love to divulge the details but you know what they say, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

For dinner we went to Golden State. To top off my day, I went classic, with the burger, fries, and root beer on tap. With a scoop of Scoops ice cream for dessert. Yowza! What a perfect day.

Last night was a trip to the Hollywood Bowl to see Ray LaMontagne. This guy is so amazing. His voice and his music are powerful and moving. He's a pretty shy guy and didn't say much on stage. His music just speaks for itself. If you are not familiar with his music he is one to take a listen to.

The Hollywood Bowl picnic basket included:
Pasta Frittata - simple and yummy...the lemon zest makes it. Used basil instead of thyme.
Black Bean salad - Used canned beans, substituted queso fresco for feta, added corn, and would have topped with pepitas if I had them. Great recipe, especially the dressing.
Caprese - heirloom tomato, mozzarella, basil, olive oil, salt, and pepper.
Wine: Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand (drink me!)

We brought dessert but didn't even eat it.
fresh raspberries and blueberries, tapioca pudding, and shortcake.

When we got home I hade a spoon full of tapioca. Believe it or not I had never had tapioca pudding before. It is soooo good. Loved it and I love that there is dessert waiting for me at home in my fridge.

Tonight we are going to make shrimp tacos and put the bean salad on the tacos with the shrimps. I kept the arugula separate from the bean mixture so the greens wouldn't get soggy. I think this is going to be a delicious combo and different enough to finish up the bean salad. Maybe a little guacamole to top it off. Olé!

Oh and a side note: If you have been chained to your desk and inactive for too long...just take one exercise class per day. My quads are killing me and I can barely walk. It will be interesting in spin class tomorrow. If you hear whimpering and see a woman with tears running down her face in the back of class...that will be me. Hopefully the music will be blasting as usual to drown out my cries. hehe.

What would you do-oo-oo?

Summer treats!

My favorite flavor popsicle is banana.
My favorite flavor ice cream is mint chocolate chip.
My favorite flavors of gelato are bacio (hazelnut) & pistachio, but I love to say stracciatella (chocolate chip).
My favorite summer fruits? Aw...don't make me pick.

One favorite is watermelon. Last weekend I made Watermelon Lemonade from Smitten Kitchen
It is sweet and slightly tart and very refreshing. I juiced enough watermelon and lemons to make a second batch yesterday.

What are you favorite flavors of summer?
